Gardeners set to carry the can as hosepipes are banned

GARDENERS are being warned to watch their watering habits and encouraged to concentrate on dryer crops as water companies confirm the hosepipe ban set to hit Barnet is likely to last until the autumn.

The ban, which covers the south east of England, begins today following “exceptionally low” rainfall that has made the last two years the driest period since 1900. But watering cans are still permitted.

Veolia, which supplies the borough’s
residents, alongside Thames Water, revealed it was unlikely that homeowners would be allowed to use a hose for watering gardens or cleaning their car for the duration of the summer.

“The ban will only be lifted when we
are confident that we can continue to
meet the demands of our customers,” a spokeswoman said.

She added that if the situation did not improve the ban could be extended to commercial companies, including car washes.
