In the Garden: Before buying new mower, do some homework

The first lawn mowing will likely begin in early to mid-April, like it or not. This seven-month job will last into November. The good news is one of the newer mowers can make the job easier.

When it is time to make a purchase of anything from a kitchen appliance to lawn mower, some consumers have trouble knowing how to begin the process. Over my long life of making purchases, here are some practices that work well for me.

First are recommendations from friends, relatives, trusted salespersons with whom previous purchases were made, repairmen familiar with the item or simply word-of-mouth advice from others. Another reliable source is information from Consumers Reports, which has professionals testing all kinds of products from autos to mowers. Their test results are published in the monthly Consumer Reports magazine.

Last April I checked out new models of self-propelled, walk-behind mowers to see what changes have been made. The 2011 model had four important changes from my 2002 model. First, an automatic choke (no more pressing a primer bulb), a wider 22-inch cut instead of a 21-inch, an easy to open or close side discharge cover (use for tall grass) and a blade shut-off (blade control bar) attached to the handle. I liked all of these changes and the mower was immediately purchased.
