Burtonsville lawn mower repair business faces Montgomery-ordered shutdown

There aren’t many people who do what Patricia Dunn does.

The Burtonsville native bought her father’s lawn mower repair shop in 1988. She doesn’t sell new equipment and said she hasn’t raised her prices in five years. A few of her roughly 5,000 customers come from as far as the Eastern Shore, so Dunn will repair their mowers within hours of their arrival. If the power is out or a major snowstorm hits, she’ll open up shop to fix generators or snow blowers.

But Pat’s Lawn Mower Service is in jeopardy because of what her lawyer labeled a bureaucratic misunderstanding. On April 10, the county will ask a judge to shut the business down. Her warehouse, constructed in 2009 on a 3-acre plot of land on Sandy Spring Road east of Md. 29, does not comply with zoning code.

Dunn is hoping county officials will give her a reprieve.

“It’s my livelihood and it’s a family business,” Dunn said. “And I want to keep it going. I think that the county needs to stand up here and be accountable for their actions.”
