2012 Dakar Rally Results
Following the only rest day in the 2012 Dakar Rally, the motorcycle grid competed Monday in Stage Eight, a 448-mile route from Copiapo to Antofagasta, with 277 miles timed.
And the story remained the same up top, with the Cyril Despres and Marc Coma dual garnering all the attention.
Although the Spaniard Coma had navigational issues early in the stage, the MRW Red Bull AMV KTM rider, a three-time winner at Dakar, avoided getting trapped in the mud in the first few miles of the timed special, allowing him to take the win. It was Coma's 20th stage victory in his Dakar history, and fourth this year.
Despres, also a three-time Dakar winner, wasn't so lucky. The Frenchman got his Red Bull KTM 450 Rally trapped in the mud. Despres, eventually finished Stage Eight in sixth, 9:14 behind Coma. And due to the mistake, which caused him 10 minutes to free the KTM, Despres lost his overall lead.
Coma now leads Despres by 1:26 after eight of 14 stages. As for the other top finishers in Stage Eight, Coma was followed by KTM's Ruben Faria (7:00 behind), Yamaha's Helder Rodrigues (7:10 behind), and Husqvarna's Barreda Bort (8:44 behind).
