SANDWICH — There's a reason "the kitchen is the heart of the home" has become a cliché.
Besides food being a main reason for family togetherness — and, for some, a way to show love and uphold beloved traditions — most people can remember how meal preparation, family chats, homework time and celebrations so often end up in the kitchen.
And although the ways in which families use kitchens have changed through the centuries, preparing meals has always been a focal point of every day.
Those were main reasons behind both Historic New England's creation of the "America's Kitchens" traveling exhibit and for officials at Heritage Museums & Gardens wanting to host that display at the Sandwich complex through October.
"Memories of home usually include memories of time spent in the kitchen," notes the companion book to the exhibit. "... More than any other room, the kitchen symbolizes the best of family life, engendering memories of warmth, comforting smells and family celebrations."
