Even before it opened in 1940, Alamo Stadium was at the center of controversy as local leaders struggled for years to find a way to build a public sports venue.

Now, officials of the San Antonio Independent School District are moving cautiously on proposed state and local historic designations. But SAISD Board President Ed Garza said he's confident the district and the San Antonio Conservation Society will strike a good balance.

“I even brought up (the idea of) a video scoreboard just to see what the reaction would be,” Garza said. However, “I think their concern is just focused on the original structure.”

The conservation society, which last year had the stadium and adjacent convocation center added to the National Register of Historic Places , has asked the city and state to protect them from a loss of character.

“It is an outstanding example of rustic Art Moderne institutional design of the New Deal Era. It is also distinguished for its display of large tile murals executed by local artisans employed through the federal Works Progress Administration ,” Nancy Avellar , conservation society president, wrote in a letter to the city's Historic and Design Review Commission supporting a landmark designation.
