Couch potatoes, arise. Throw off that afghan. Go out and feel the sun on your back. But before you head for the garden or golf course, lace up your running shoes, hop on your bike or pick up a bat make sure your back is ready for a season of strenuous outdoor activity.
Start low and go slow. That’s the advice of Dr. Sheila Dugan, a physiatrist and associate professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Rush University Medical Center.
“Whatever your sport, start with some low-impact exercise and gradually increase your level of activity. You can’t go from being only mildly active to biking 20 miles or playing 18 holes of golf without experiencing pain. Your body needs time to adapt,” said Dr. Dugan.
There’s a reason baseball players spend six weeks in spring training fine-tuning their bodies. Dugan suggests following their lead and pacing yourself. Start slowly and gradually increase your physical activity. Take time to warm up and stretch. If your goal is to run five miles a day start with a brisk one-mile walk and gradually ramp up your distance and speed.
