The month of April started out as predicted with a nice rainfall. Who would have thought after the 2011 fall and winter we would be concerned about the lack of rain? My neighbor mowed his yard yesterday and I fear he is destined to do that every week until October. I like my “girlee” to hold off as long as is possible because mowing the grass is like eating potato chips. Once you get started it seems it never ends.

The New Jersey Department of Agriculture Division of Animal Health and Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory (AHDL) has moved from their current downtown Trenton location to the new NJ Public Health, Environmental, and Agricultural Laboratories (NJPHEAL) facility, located at 3 Schwarzkopf Drive Ewing, NJ 08628. The Division of Animal Health maintains disease control programs to protect the health and well-being of livestock in New Jersey. They track information about emerging diseases around the world that may impact the Garden State and conduct epidemiological investigations of livestock diseases and drug residues. The Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory provides diagnostic services to support disease control programs, health management, and productivity of livestock, poultry, fish, and wildlife. The laboratory serves New Jersey’s companion animal owners by providing private veterinarians with fast, accurate, convenient, and economical diagnostic testing services. The move will enable the AHDL to expand its services. Some new capabilities include: a state-of-the-art necropsy lab; specialized laboratory space to handle select agents, dangerous pathogens, and highly toxic chemicals, increasing the lab’s capacity to respond to high consequential animal diseases like avian influenza, foot-and-mouth-disease and classical swine fever; and research space to discover next generation tests and reagents to fight emerging diseases.
