There’s a reason February is our shortest month. It’s our most boring month. It seems like winter will never end. We’ll give anything for a weekend of sunshine and warmth.

Over the years, I’ve collected quite a stable of gardening tools. Now’s the time to sharpen shovels, hoes, weeders and whatevers. I coat wooden handles with linseed oil. I organize the mess that is the garage.
While you’re at it, take a look at your mower. It’s time to remove the blade and either sharpen it yourself or take it some place. Oil up the joints and make sure all the nuts and bolts are tight. You’ll probably need a new sparkplug.
That takes care of one weekend. The next one is strategy-planning time. I sit down with pencil and paper and draw maps of my gardens. Then I plan where to plant what, with help of the seed catalogues. Stick to the plan, temper your bubbly enthusiasm.
