A Garden Grows in Franklinton Neighborhood

COLUMBUS -- A local organization is bravely tackling the problem of vacant homes in West Columbus' Franklinton neighborhood -- one lot at time. 

Since 2007, Franklinton Gardens has been taking over the lots of abandoned homes and building gardens.

Co-director Patrick Kaufman tells ABC6/FOX28 News' Meghan McCorkell, "We've started to slowly, but surely, purchase land in the neighborhood to reclaim it on behalf of Franklinton and create beauty in those spaces." 

The project has nearly doubled in size since it's inception.  Kaufman hopes getting rid of vacant homes makes his community safer.

He tells McCorkell, "It makes it a safer place because there aren't these homes that are dangerous places where kids can go into and get hurt."

The gardens also provide fresh produce for the community, which doesn't have its own grocery store.  Families
