Sure, there are the occasional high-pitched screams when they see a spider or the grumbling about dirty hands from the otherwise enjoyable romp in the dirt.
But, they really have taken on quite a love of gardening.
It’s enjoyable to see Megan and Ciara, my daughters — but you probably know them by now — experiencing the wonders of nature, especially when they show excitement over the sighting of a worm, or from taking on a new project.
I recently spoke to Jenny Warhol, manager at Abma’s Farm and a master gardener who shared a few tips on gardening with children. According to Jenny, the best thing to plant when it comes to gardening with children is vegetables, because it is a great way to get children to eat their greens.
“Not only is gardening a wonderful family experience, it’s educational for children too," she said.
Gardening incorporates subjects such as math and science; children have to measure the space seeds need to grow, and there's no better way to start a conversation about health at the dinner table.
If you love to garden and have children you should allow them to help you. Simple tasks like this can teach them a lot about the environment and the cycle of growth. Use this opportunity to enrich their lives and get them interested in the basics of life.
