GREEN WITH ANSWERS: The natural way to a green lawn

Did you know there is poison in the grass?

At least in some grass.

It’s that time of year again to get out the fertilizer, weed killer and pest preventative treatments for the lawn. According to a report by Professor Nathan Diegelman   www.goodheartgroupinc.com/lawn/poison.pdf

Unfortunately, while we are making our grass grow we are waging war with  poisons on some of the natural, beneficial gifts that Mother Nature has given us, such as earthworms. The earthworms don’t tolerate those treatments very well and they truly are a gift that should be protected in our lawns. Earthworm “castings” are actually sold as garden and soil enrichments as they are loaded with nutrients. You can buy earthworms so that your lawn and garden can be aerated and enriched by their activity. You can find these on the Internet.

You may have already heard that our frog population is declining because herbicides and pesticides have done a job on their reproduction. Those little green guys help us by consuming bugs for breakfast, lunch and dinner. All those fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides affect our environment in so many ways and eventually end up in our lakes and in some water supplies.

Recognizing our garden footprint
Healthy compost contains yard waste like unseeded grass clippings, hay straw and old plants from our garden as its base. If we buy our compost in bulk, we must check that it's crumbly with no more than a few small pieces of leaf or twig left in it

Root of it All: Scilla — A different kind of weed
Every spring, small clumps of what the local garden center person identified as scilla start growing in the yard. The leaves look kind of like chives, and eventually blend in to the rest of the grass, so it isn't a critical problem.

Garden column: Sodding lawn is a sound investment
Annual weeds from spring seeding can quickly outcompete grass seedlings; thus you must typically spray weed prevention herbicides and weed killer on your lawn. It is not like the garden, where cultural practices such as rototilling are feasible means

Don't Get Rounded Up
There's nothing more repellent to a weed than a thriving garden full of good soil and competing plants. The areas where we've successfully beaten back our (still incurable) Bermuda grass are where we've found plants that can compete long enough to take

We may NOT have to plant rice after all!
Don't bother trying to kill them with grass or weed killer. These will only kill plants having chlorophyll and since mushrooms have none, it won't work and will just be wasted. I pick them when they sprout and toss them into the trash.
