NORTH COAST GARDENING: Start root vegetables

Unseasonably mild, dry weather has made it possible to work in the garden earlier than usual here on the North Coast. Now is a great time to put in root crops. Carrots, potatoes, beets and radishes are all early vegetables that favor the cool, moist days of spring.

Before planting, take extra care in preparing the soil for root crops. A bountiful harvest will be had if you do.

BEETS -- Beets can be grown almost all year long on the coast. Sow seeds this month and expect to begin harvesting within 10 to 12 weeks. Beets need a loose, fluffy soil high in organic matter. As with all root crops, use plenty of compost in the soil and a fertilizer high in phosphorous. A mix like 4-3-4 works well. Use only manure that is heavily composted; really old stuff that no longer looks or smells like manure. Thin
