Over the Garden Fence: Bluebird conference a chance to learn, enjoy
"Celebrating Things With Wings," an Ohio Bluebird Conference at the Arden Shisler Center in Wooster, brought knowledge, expertise and energy on Feb. 25. This free, educational conference was everything it promised. Five of us from Bucyrus attended. In addition to myself, fellow bluebirder Judy Makeever joined Earth, Wind and Flowers Club members Cheryl Corney, June Gebhardt and Sharon Stump.
Mel Bolt of Wooster opened the session with his experiences with bluebirds, pointing out the "Changing Behavior of Bluebirds." He explained how backyard practices are altering the way bluebirds behave. He gently suggested that our purchases of cheap bird seed blends make for strengthening the power of house sparrows. He admitted that some of the things we do skew the statistics.
Don Plant came next to share his spirited knowledge of bats, particularly in Ohio. There are 1,240 species in the world, with around a dozen here in Ohio; of those only the Indiana bat (an Ohio resident) is endangered. Plant's love and appreciation for these pollinators and consumers of insects was clear.
