This year I ordered Sugar Anns from G.’s and they were securely here in plenty of time. I was tempted to plant them two weeks ago, but Fred insisted that was premature. Think of the blizzard of 1888 that people remembered so vividly in our childhood! It fell in mid-March and people could walk to the top of telephone poles on the piled snow. That could still happen, of course, but I delayed my pea planting until yesterday.

Then I opened the beloved packet. YIKES!!! They were pink! I surveyed the packet and saw in small print, “Treated with thiram. Do not use for food or feed.” But they were my only peas, and I might not have more rain-free hours this March 1. I planted one squat-worth.

Then I went to the computer. Google took me to Beyond Pesticides, one of my cherished charities. It dubs thiram “toxic.” Could I ever say again that I have gardened “without poisons, commercial fertilizers, or power machinery”? Well, people do ask about the grass clipping we collect from others’ lawns. Are they free of poisons? What about my solar-powered electric fence? Is it “power machinery?” Life is full of compromises, and language is slippery.
