Ask the Gardner: Annuals offer no apologies

For the longest time, annuals were considered passe. Perennials had become all the rage, and the odd little orphan tucked away in some corner was acknowledged almost apologetically.

Annuals were so common –– too easy, too colorful, too familiar. Fortunately, that trend has been left behind by all but the most hard-core perennial-only designers; the humble annual has been keeping company with the top perennial aristocrats for some time now.

True annuals are plants that germinate, flower, set seed and die in one season. Within this group, there are frost-sensitive species, like marigolds and zinnias, and hardy annuals like bachelor's buttons and poppies, which can shrug off a light frost.

They are direct-sown in the garden before the last spring frost, or even in the fall, germinating the following spring. Some plants, such as geraniums and snapdragons, are called annuals in various books and magazines, even though they really are perennial in tropical and subtropical climates.
