Over 500 readers respond to survey on Portland's curbside composting

Do you have opinions about Portland's new curbside composting program? That's easy: YES.

More than 500 of you, from across the city, responded to our Jan. 28 call for comment.

Funny and outrageous, honest and brutally honest, earnest and environmentally conscious -- opinions in the informal survey ran the gamut. Still, most -- about 55 percent -- said they support the system, which on Oct. 31 added weekly food-scrap collections while cutting back to every-other-week garbage pickup .

Of the other 45 percent, respondents mostly fell into two categories: Those who vehemently oppose the change (with many singling out Mayor Sam Adams for his support of the program) and a smaller group who said they like the concept of diverting food waste from landfills but wish Portland would tweak the system.

One frequent request? Bring back weekly trash collection, especially for elderly residents with medical waste and families with babies who use disposable diapers.
