New community garden opens Saturday

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Mayor Carolyn Goodman and other members of the community will join members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the official opening of the Provident Community Garden on Saturday, March 10.

The community garden is the largest raised grow box community garden in the western United States.

It features 90 grow boxes, 14 school grow boxes for Cumorah Academy School, four demonstration grow boxes and three, 83-foot-long community grow boxes for corn, green beans, pumpkins, melons and other produce.

Mayor Goodman and her husband Oscar have already reserved box 62 in honor of their wedding anniversary.

Another 110 grow-boxes are underway. These boxes will be available to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis. Each grow box is 10 feet long and four feet wide.

There is a one-time sign up or registration fee of $75 and a $5 monthly watering fee.

The garden provides community members the opportunity to grow their own produce.
