Our mild winter may mean a huge invasion of insects this summer. Many people reduce their insect problems with dormant oil spraying of trees and shrubs this time of year. Follow label directions, especially with regard to temperature and precipitation expected.
Do not spray on or near blue needled trees such as Colorado blue spruce. The oil will destroy the waxy covering that gives needles a blue tinge. The tree will recover, but its not attractive until the tree does produce more covering for the needles.
The dormant oil smothers eggs and live insects hiding in bark crevices. Since it also kills beneficial insects and I have a healthy number of those in my yard, I dont spray dormant oil.

If soil is wet, surface gardeners should not walk into the bed unless theyre walking on temporary paths of lumber, spreading the distribution of their weight.
