The season for irrigating trees
The grasses now turning from green to brown on the hills surrounding Napa Valley signal that our long, “Mediterranean” dry season is setting in. For gardeners and tree managers, it is time to turn attention to irrigation.
In my previous column, we looked at the value of monitoring with respect to pests and diseases. Watchfulness and some basic knowledge help us make informed decisions. The same principle applies to watering.
It is not as simple as just turning on the irrigation system when the weather turns dry and warm. While a 24-inch diameter coast redwood, with roots ranging far and wide in the landscape, soaks up about 500 gallons of water per month, a newly transplanted shade tree sapling needs only about 5 gallons per week applied directly onto the nursery root ball until it is established. In contrast, mature California native oaks are “built” to withstand about 7 months of warm, dry weather every year. For most trees, too much water leads to root disease, while drought stress can lead to reduced growth, reduced resistance to pests and diseases, and worse.
