Anything Grows: Can't see the garden for the weeds

I don't know what happened to winter this year, but spring is here. Venturing out into my yard to enjoy this beautiful weather, I am appalled to see that the majority of all that green growth out there is coming from the weeds. Perhaps our lack of winter is to blame for the prolific crop of weeds this year. You know the saying you can't see the forest for the trees? Well I can't see my garden for the weeds.

I can see where I did a good job in weed prevention simply by looking out my window. There is a definite difference between the front yard and that back yard. The backyard butterfly garden/water garden area, which is nowhere near my path from my car door to the garage door, has morphed into a patch of weeds with no discernible border. If it weren't for the fish I may not even be able to find it.

But the front yard beds that I see every day as I pull out of the yard and pass on my way from car door to house door is almost free of weeds. Could it be that periodically I snatch out the weeds to keep my front yard looking nice? Could it be that I thoroughly mulch these areas every year, which helps to keep the weeds down? Or perhaps it is the pre-emergent herbicide I put out periodically. The truth is, it is a combination of all of these.
