The old man and his garden

I could see the old man standing knee-high in the field of shimmering, bluish-green wheat, heads dipping and bobbing in the light breeze as small waves came and went in the warmth of the sun.

He stood where his garden once was and is no more.

Just too old now to hoe peppers, pick tomatoes, set poles for beans and spread fertilizer by hand. A lifetime of gardens had matured with late summer and slept under cold, autumn rains and winter snows. There were those days when pumpkin vines would trail into the rows of corn and hide from his eyes until discovered in the fall when the corn dried and the deep orange pumpkins could easily be seen against tan stalks and the dry weeds of early autumn.

Now they are just memories. There were plenty of tomatoes for his wife to can, beans to dry for soups, squashes for sweet breads. There was the annual anticipation, in late spring, about when the last frost would come so that he could then plant the garden. But no more.

Deep in the country, it was just the old man and his garden along the edge of the corn and soybean fields. There was always time to fret about the battle waged against bugs and plant diseases, so much sun, too little water.
