Making the most of her lot: lush garden

June Peay has created her own piece of paradise on her 68-by-50-foot lot in Spanish Town. Her lush garden is planted with native, tropical and exotic plants and not one inch of lawn.

"It's a small lot," said Perry Wilson, the gardener who has helped Peay for more than 15 years. "The garden kind of circles the house."

Neighbors in the area know the house well. They pass by to see what is blooming. They watch the changes of season.

"We have some regulars. Some people I don't even know their names," said Peay, who watches the neighborhood comings and goings from the wide wraparound front porch of her Arts and Crafts bungalow built in 1923.

When Peay purchased the home in December 1996, the garden was protected by a chain-link fence. "There was a row of half-dead holly shrubs in front, and that was it," she said. "There were rocks in the soil. It was awful." A narrow deck at the back of the house was walled by a garage that was in danger of collapsing.
