Wallen to lead presentation Friday

The Whale Project, the community group sponsoring the 25-foot bronze humpback whale and fountain for Juneau’s waterfront, has invited the public to a slide presentation by R.T. “Skip” Wallen at noon this Friday, March 9, at the JACC.

Wallen, who also sculpted the “Windfall Fisherman” brown bear statue next to the Dimond Courthouse downtown, and the “Gang of Four” sculpture of the bear mother and three cubs at the DIPAC Hatchery, has been commissioned by The Whale Project to create the life-scale humpback whale in recognition of the 50th Anniversary of Alaska statehood.

“Spike” the eight-foot humpback whale which is the prototype for the life-scale sculpture, is now located on the lawn at the JACC and will be migrating to UAS.

Construction is now underway for the life-scale whale.

Wallen has been celebrating Alaska in drawings, paintings, and stone lithographs since territorial days. For the Silver Anniversary of Alaska Statehood in 1984, Lynn and Skip Wallen donated “Windfall Fisherman” to the city of Juneau. He also has sculptures in Geneva, Switzerland; Amsterdam, Netherlands; at The World Bank in Washington D.C.; at The Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta; at Merck & Co. World Headquarters in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey; at the Lion’s Clubs International World Headquarters in Chicago; at The University of Houston, Texas; and, most recently, the WWII Alaska-Siberia Memorial in Fairbanks.
