El Jardîn grows close to home

When I travel to Mexico, a tour of public and private gardens is always part of my itinerary. The tours include home gardens, mission gardens, and botanic gardens.

My favorites are the home garden tours. A Mexican home garden is meant to be a festive space for family and friends. A long tenure of Spanish rule and native Indian tribes influenced the design and plants of Mexican gardens.

Arches, courtyards, tiled patios, terra cotta containers, mosaic walls and tiles, and central fountains reflect the influence of Spain. The cooking area of the outdoor kitchen has a wood-burning clay chimenia or fireplace made of decorative stone or tiles.

Water in the form of a fountain, pool, or well is another essential part of the garden.

The walkways or patio floors are paved in stonework and tile in warm reds, brown, and terra cotta.

Colorful Talavera tile and pottery was introduced to Mexico by Spanish artisans in the 1700s. It is still made today in Puebla, Mexico, and is sold at many local garden centers.
