Homeowners open gardens for tour

The answer is: It doesn't matter. With 13 different gardens on the tour, including 11 private gardens and two public gardens (the New Hanover County Arboretum and Airlie Gardens – Airlie is Saturday only), there's plenty to see on the tour.

In fact, there might be even more to see without the flashy azalea flowers.

Warm weather has pushed late spring and early summer plants into bloom alongside gently unfurling soft green leaves of trees and shrubs to create unexpected garden vignettes. Because the tour primarily invites guests into private gardens that are only open for three days, it's a big treat to see flowers in bloom that are normally barely peeking out of the ground this time of year.

Outdoor living

It's clear that this year's hosts love enjoying their "outdoor living rooms." Keep your cameras handy, because you'll get plenty of ideas about how to perk up your garden and create cozy outdoor spaces.

Gardens four and five are part of the charming Parkside neighborhood in Mayfaire. Smaller lots create naturally cozy spaces, but it's what hosts Dan and Laura Sullivan (garden No. 4) and Jaques and Michele Eagle (garden No. 5) have done with their gardens that makes them unique.
