At the far end of the lake are three classic pieces from the heady days of the early 1960s, when he ripped sculpture off the plinth and began making strikingly original work out of scrap metal, following a life-changing visit to America in 1959. Capital (1960) stands tall and bright orange, its ragged edges testament to an artist in his mid-thirties learning how to use a cutting torch. Studded with rivets like enormous barnacles, it still feels wonderfully rough-hewn and fresh. When I visited on Easter Sunday, the eye-catching colour seemed no less natural than the piercing yellow daffodils on the bank below.

A year after Capital, Caro made Sculpture Seven, in which three horizontal girders are arranged like unfolding and interrelated musical notes. The bottom beams levitate on barely visible black wooden wedges, giving all this heavy metal a hovering sprightliness. The effect is augmented by the jaunty diagonal of the smaller beam stacked on top, as well as the predominant colour — a slick, synthetic green redolent of a swinging new era of Technicolor and Pop. Lock (1962), a low-slung, moodier work in midnight blue, expands the new theme of horizontality. At this point, Caro was experimenting with how flat and abstract his sculptures could get.
