These are the most-often asked questions called into the extension office so far this spring.

1. When is a good time to seed the small patches of bare soil in my lawn?

Overseeding into thin turf or small patches of bare soil can be done in late winter, spring, or early fall. Overseeding can be done by hand in small areas or by using a disk-type seeder that drops seed into slits in the soil. It is important for seed to have good contact with loosened soil so that its roots can anchor and develop.

Note: If you apply a pre-emergent herbicide (like an early crabgrass preventative), the chemical will also prevent germination of grass seed. The product label will tell you how long to wait before seeding new grass.

2. Should I fertilize my lawn to improve its quality?

Inadequate fertility or acid soils can limit growth of turfgrass. The best way to determine pH and nutrient levels is with a professional analysis. Soil testing services are available from the Agricultural Analytical Services Laboratory at Penn State. The lab will provide a detailed analysis and will give recommendations for amounts of fertilizer and lime that need to be added to the lawn.
