A DEDICATED team of detectives has been drafted in to catch arsonists who have plagued residents for months.

It comes after four cars were set alight in Astley Bridge yesterday morning in what was the latest in a series of similar attacks in the area this year.

A Vauxhall Corsa in a car park off Blackburn Road, a green Renault Clio, a green Rover in Broad O’Th’ Lane and a black Vauxhall Zafira in Drysdale View were destroyed by the yobs. All four incidents took place in a 50- minute spell and occupied 17 firefighters from Bolton Central, Bolton North and Farnworth stations.

They spent nearly two hours putting out the fires which all started between 3.20am and shortly before 4.10am.

Detective Inspector Andy Cunliffe said: “We are treating these fires as extremely serious offences. The consequences could have been very serious if these fires had spread or someone had been injured.

“It is no exaggeration to say that arson attacks can be deadly so whomever is responsible needs to be stopped immediately.
