Bob Fulton turns metal fence ends into garden art. He takes a 6-inch hollow steel ball, the type that would be used on a wrought-iron fence, and welds baluster collars and decorations on the top and bottom. He then powder-coats the balls, "which is a 15- to 20-year finish," and hand-paints on designs with a long-lasting sign painter enamel.HOW HE GOT STARTED: Four years ago, Fulton was visiting a friend when he noticed several metal balls in the garage. "I asked him what he was going to use them for, and he said they were going to be added to his wrought-iron fence, but never got around to the project." The friend told Fulton that he could have the balls if he wanted them. Fulton's daughter had asked him to make some garden art for her Nehalem home, so he began painting the metal orbs. While he was making them, "a neighbor saw what I was doing and said, 'I want you to make two for our garden.' " From there Fulton has started a small business, selling the decorated globes
