Eleven months of the year, it's almost impossible to detect the passage of time in our part of Florida.
Fall is more about football than foliage. Winter is nearly as green as midsummer.
Then, in March, our seasonal inertia breaks.
Yellow blossoms explode from the contorted branches of the region's tabebuia trees. It's as if they're proclaiming, through their trumpet-shaped blossoms, "You're alive today, but don't forget — you won't always be!"
We have the late Edwin Menninger to thank for that.
Menninger was a businessman, a writer, an advocate for public parks and a horticulturist. He founded the Stuart News and Southeastern Printing, he helped create Jonathan Dickinson State Park and Memorial Park — but his most memorable legacy is arguably as "The Flowering Tree Man."
From seed, Menninger raised and distributed tens of thousands tropical flowering trees, including many tabebuias (pronounced tab-eh-BOO-yuhs) planted in downtown Stuart.
